The Southern Riverina News this week contacted local Picola District Football Netball League clubs for their view on the decision to affiliate with AFL Goulburn Murray. Here are the responses:
Stuart Schifferle (Berrigan president): I think the affiliation will be a good thing for the league in the long run. The pathway for the juniors was our main concern so we were in support of the affiliation with Goulburn Murray. We don’t want our young footballers being at risk of missing out on playing in the TAC Cup because we’re not a part of the AFL (system). I thought the league was going well the way it was but we’re more than happy to comply with the salary cap and points system.
Malcolm Hart (Tocumwal committee member): We’re pleased that a decision was finally reached and we’re 100 per cent behind the affiliation. With it only being a 12 month agreement it gives us plenty of time to find any issues we have and to reassess with less risk involved compared to a multi-year agreement. We as a club just want to go out there and play footy.
Ben Littmann (Blighty secretary/treasurer): Given the short timeframe we decided it was best to be affiliated with Goulburn Murray. The 12 month agreement will at least give the league some time to work things out with Goulburn Murray to keep everyone happy. We should be fine with the points system, but it will all be a bit of a learning curve. We’re all volunteers so it’s a lot more work for us with the salary cap and making sure we follow through with all the required procedures. We just wanted the issue to be resolved and to get the footy season going.
