New recruits at Redeyes

March 17, 2017

Newly appointed Blighty assistant coach Brayden Hall (left) will join Jack Tyndall in the coaching ranks.

After leading Blighty to the second round of finals as a playing-coach last year, Daniel Kirchen will step back to a non-playing role in 2017.

The 39 year-old played 14 games last season and has decided that it’s best for him to do his work off the field.

The Redeyes have picked up where they left off last year with strong recruiting during the off-season.

Headlining the recruits is classy Finley onballer-forward Jed Brain, who kicked three goals in the Cats’ losing Murray Football League grand final last year.

Also making their way to Blighty is Deni Rams key position player Matt O’Connor, as well as utilities Charlie Simpson and Brad Haines, who both had a year away from footy last year.

Kirchen believes that with these players, his side can go further this year.

‘‘We identified what we were missing and just wanted to fill those spaces,’’ he said.

‘‘The side needed a couple of bigger bodies and a bit of midfield depth so we’ve covered that with the recruits we’ve picked up.

‘‘Our list has all the makings of a premiership side with a great group of blokes from last year who all re-committed to the club as well as the recruits we’ve picked up.’’

The Redeyes will have key position player Brayden Hall join Jack Tyndall as an assistant coach this year.

‘‘Hally took charge a few times last year so he’ll be a great addition to our coaching ranks,’’ Kirchen said.

‘‘We have plenty of leaders at the club so that should work in our favour.’’

The Redeyes will have an array of ruck choices again this year with talented brothers Jake and Drew Plattfuss as well as defender Brock Gray and O’Connor all options.

Club stalwart Kyel Bain, Tyndall, Lachie MacDonald, Tom Druitt, Josh Peers and Sam Singleton make-up a midfield filled with grunt and flair with all players capable of running off half-back to set up attacking plays.

At the back end of the field will be Hall, Cody Jordan, Matt Tubb and the experienced Leigh Culton.

Jake Plattfuss will continue to be a focal point up forward along with Lenny Clarke, and Beau Close roaming at ground level.

Ins: Jed Brain, James Kennedy (Finley), Matt O’Connor (Deni Rams), Charlie Simpson, Brad Haines (year off).

Outs: Daniel Kirchen (retired), Daniel Jordan (work commitments).
